The food

A day spent on the slopes, is a day well spent but after a long and quite probably challenging day the idea of traipsing around a supermarket and coming back to cook dinner is one that would fill anyone with dread! Thankfully that isn’t something you have to face at Chalet Mathilde. Our catered options take all the stress and hassle out of your week – not to mention the washing up.

Each morning you’ll be provided with a full breakfast consisting of both continental and cooked options (continental only on our day off). When you return in the afternoon you’ll be greeted by a daily home-made cake, biscuits, tea, and coffee – enough to keep you going before dinner.

In the evening you will be presented with a three course meal with unlimited wine for you to enjoy. Our aim is to ensure that all guests have tasty and satisfying meals and so are more than happy to discuss any particular likes or dislikes in advance. On our day off you have the opportunity to dine out at one of the many restaurants in the local area. We will of course, take you to and from the restaurant at a time that suits.

The resorts

You have the rare opportunity of skiing a variety of local resorts while staying at Chalet Mathilde, enabling you to choose to ski a different resort every day or find your favourite and stay there for the week – whatever you decide, the choice is yours. We are always on hand to help you decide, however here is a description of some of the resorts nearby.

Les Arcs

Les arcsLes Arcs is our ‘home’ resort and the one we are closest to. We can drop you right at the bottom of the chairlifts at Villaroger within 5 minutes or at the Funculaire in Bourg-St-Maurice taking you to Arc 1600 in under 10.

The ski area is huge, varied and good for all levels of skier and snowboarder. Slopes range from wooded runs down to the villages of Villaroger and Peisey to high altitude skiing from the top of Aiguille Rouge (3200m) which is also the start of one of the longest ski runs in Europe, descending over 2km in altitude.

The double-decker Vanoise Express cable car also gives easy access to the La Plagne ski area. The whole area is appropriately named the Paradiski and offers 425km of pistes!

Sainte Foy

Rated as number four in CNN’s best hidden resorts in Europe, the family friendly resort of Sainte Foy is only 15 minutes away. We think this is the perfect resort for families, from beginners to expert skiers as it is small and quiet enough to have a really relaxed feel. You never really have to queue for a lift and often have beautiful tree-lined blue and red runs to yourself. The resort has two free nursery slopes for beginners as well as a dedicated sledging area for children of all ages, over looked by some wonderful piste-side restaurants.

At the other end of the spectrum, the off-piste at Ste Foy is unrivalled and can offer powder crazy skiers and boarders a day or two to remember.

Ste Foy

La Rosière

Chalet Mathilde is 12 minutes from the chairlift to the resort of La Rosière, which is unique in the Savoie region for offering international skiing thanks to its link with the Italian resort of La Thuile. Aptly nicknamed the ‘sunshine resort’, it is fantastic on a blue bird day with its wide, open runs and great views. Why not pop across the border for an Italian lunch and a limoncello or two?

Val D’Isère and Tignes

These world-famous ski resorts are within a 30 minute drive. Val D’Isère and Tignes combine to form the Espace Killy area, providing an amazing 300km of pistes, offering skiing to suit all levels, from relaxed greens and blues to some of the most challenging off-piste in the world. For the advanced skiers, you can’t go to Val d’Isère without attempting the Olympic downhill run ominously named ‘La Face’.

Lessons, ski hire and lift passes

Each resort has many options regarding equipment hire. The hire shops in Bourg-St-Maurice are ideally situated for skiing different resorts during your stay. It is best to book these online in advance as there are some good discounts to be had.

If some of your party are looking to have lessons, logistically we recommend ski schools in Arc 1600 and Ste Foy.

If you are looking to ski the same resort for the week, it is best to book you pass online, however we will drop you at the ticket office of the various resorts each morning, so tickets can be purchased daily if required (probably the best option if wanting to ski various resorts).

If you have any queries relating to any of the above, take a look at our FAQs or contact us and we will happily advise you further.
